Amber Mortgage Solutions – Supporting Local Business

Thinking of stepping out and starting you own business. We interviewed Natasha from Outhouse Salon, who told us how she started and her experiences so far.

And for those of you thinking about starting your own business this article might give you a little inspiration.

Outhouse Salon

My name is Natasha Withrington, I’m 28 and I recently took the plunge and started my own business. After working in hair salons for over 10 years as a hair stylist, I felt that I could offer a better service to my clients if I had my own space and could make my own rules. I wanted to move to the next chapter in my life and open my own salon. I’m a big believer in offering clients a personal experience, where they would feel important, valued and happy.

With the fantastic support from my friends, family and especially my husband, over the past 6 months I have built a brand new salon in Rayleigh that is going from strength to strength.

Of course when I decided to start this new adventure I felt a little overwhelmed, but I can honestly say it has been the best decision ever. Not only has my confidence grown through my family and clients belief in me, but also in seeing that my clients are happy with the bespoke experience that I provide them.

Where Did You Start?

I started by creating a portfolio of my work and using social media to showcase it. I also built my own website and created my own company branding, in order to keep my expenses down and keep full control of how my business was portrayed.

How Did You Build Your Client Base?

I started out with family and friends. Social media has been such an important tool in my growth allowing new and old clients to reach and contact me. I think it has gone so well because of the passion for my work and the flexible service I provide.

Have you encountered any difficulties since you started your own business?

Yes & No, since I started it has been hard work and longer hours than I thought but it is my passion and I just want to make it the best it can be. It definitely isn’t a 9 to 5 job, the hardest part I have found is all the additional parts involved like handling bookings and not having an assistant.

Do You Have Any Advice For Someone Starting Their Own Business?

Yes, I would make sure you are financially secure and can support yourself for at least 6 months, this definitely helped me and made the transition a lot less stressful. The best advice I could offer is to just give it a go, you will never regret trying something. You don’t want to to spend your life thinking what if.

Have There Been Any Benefits Of Being Self Employed?

Because of the industry I am in, it was always hard to take a long weekend away because I always had to work Saturdays, but now I have the flexibility to work longer hours during the week so I can now go away on camping trips with my husband, which is something we both love.

Tell Us A Little Bit About Your Business?

The name is “Outhouse Salon”, I started back in October 2016 after working in the industry for over 10 years. With great support from the community and a few existing clients I started operating from my home. But I felt I needed to create a salon that took the client to a different space and make it an experience rather than just a hair cut. So my new salon was born, which took about 5 months and now is the perfect space for me to do the art I love.

I am extremely passionate about the hair industry and love nothing more than keeping up to date with new styles, techniques, changing fashions and making my clients feel great about themselves.
